Mediation process

IDIS Mediation works according to the guide lines and behavioural code of the Dutch Mediation Institute (NMI). Each mediation follows the same focused procedure in order to derive a solution that is satisfactory for all parties involved. The preparation stage runs from the moment that (one of) the parties make(s) contact with the mediator up to the first talk at the table. During this stage it is explained what mediation is, agreements are made about the process and the mediation agreement is signed by all parties. In the exploratory stage the mediator offers the parties the opportunity to tell their story. The backgrounds, the content and positions are discussed. There is also attention for the underlying emotions that are after all part of the conflicts and most of all for all the parties interests. In the negotiation stage possible solutions to the conflict can be discussed by the parties, under the mediator’s guidance. Consequently these options can be balanced out against the interests of each party involved and a combination of solutions and agreements can be decided upon. If necessary and in agreement the solutions can be referred to advisors or others. The closing stage runs from the moment the mediator looks back on the mediation process with all parties up to the signing of the mediation agreement. When the mediation process has been concluded with a signed agreement it can be called a successful mediation. If preferred and after some time has passed, a follow up appointment can be arranged to assess how the agreements have worked out in practice.
