What is mediation?

Mediation is a type of conflict negotiation where a neutral mediation expert, the mediator, leads the negotiations between the parties involved to work from their actual interests towards mutually supported and equally satisfying and optimal results. Mediation can in many cases be a good alternative for legal settlement of conflicts. An important difference from legal action is that with mediation, as opposed to legal action, there are no binding verdicts. Instead parties are guided to find their own solution, one that is satisfactory to all parties. The parties themselves keep their influence on the final solution. Mediation entails the professional supervision in re-establishing communication and investing in a joint insight into the problems that have arisen. In this process the understanding of each other’s perspective grows and solutions can be found that all parties can agree on.
